John Kingerlee – What Lies Beneath
Nicely shot film of painter, John Kingerlee, talking about the influences of nature and religion on his work. He has moved to the “edge of Europe” (Beara Peninsula in West Cork) to get away from it all. His paintings are painstakingly built up using up to one hundred layers to simulate the craggy effect of the West coast of Ireland.
Enjoy. Works well on full screen.

I am a big fan of John Kingerlee and had never heard him speak about his work before. I find his technique fascinating – using layers and layers of paint until the image emerges(up to 100 layers, can you imagine!) it must be painstaking work, not unlike an archeologist – in reverse..
I love that he thinks paintings are a way to ‘never be alone’.
